  • 5 Obstacles That Prevent us from Improving our Financial Health Prior To Retirement

How to overcome them

1.) Overwhelmed - We can sink so deeply into a hole that we can no longer see the light of day. The burden of debt can be more than we can carry and we know that we nearing a breaking point, but don't know what to do about it. Have you ever had the experience where you are sleeping, the blankets have all fallen off of the bed, you know you need to reach down and grab them but you just can't seem to wake up enough to do it. It's a kind of paralyzing situation.

2.) Don’t know what to do - The sense of being overwhelmed is so great and the burden of the situation so chaotic that you just don't know where to start. What are the first steps? The first step in the right direction is to seek out Financial Counsel. An objective, non-judgmental person can provide a new perspective on your situation and be able to help you determine what your next steps should be.

3.) Peer Pressure to maintain a Certain Image - This is one of the main reasons we get into financial trouble, to begin with. Trying to impress our friends, family, or co-workers that we got it 'goin on'. Will Smith quote: "Why are we spending money we don't have to buy things we don't want, to impress people we don't like?" If this is you, there is no time like the present to find some new friends, ones who value you for who you are instead of what you own.

4.) Conflicting values among spouses - This is a very difficult obstacle to overcome. This is where one partner may be a spender and the other one a saver. Usually, with most couples, there's one of each. A budget is crucial in this case to enable the spender to spend on what's important without guilt and without the deceit of trying to hide stuff from their mate.

5.) Procrastination - The number one financial disease of our society. We never procrastinate when it comes to instant gratification, but when it comes to anything difficult we can always put it off for another day. There are 2 great motivators of change: We either change when we HURT so much that we have to, or we have LEARNED so much that we want to. One way or another we will eventually change.

If you are nearing retirement, newly retired, or well into that stage of life and need some honest, reliable financial advice and tax planning services, I highly recommend Willis and Nancy Langford at Langford Financial. I have been working with them since the fall of 2020 and am really happy I made the switch.

I needed much better advice than I was getting from my new bank rep as I was actively preparing for retirement. I found Langford Financial online and booked a review meeting. I was happy that I was sent a complete list of all the information that would be needed prior to my initial meeting so I arrived prepared.

From that initial meeting, I decided to have Willis prepare a retirement plan for me. After we reviewed everything he had prepared, I felt much more confident in what was to come financially during retirement and how I could manage it. That's when I decided to transfer my investment portfolio from my bank to Langford Financial so they could manage it with and for me. I felt they really had my best interests at heart.

It was a pleasant surprise that their approach combined both income planning for retirement and tax planning for both the immediate future and well into retirement. This has proven to be very helpful as it has ended up saving me a lot of money (a lot!) by using credits that had been missed by the company I previously used to prepare my taxes.

I really like working with Willis and Nancy. They are very quick to answer any questions I have and can accommodate virtual or in-person meetings based on what is needed. They also produce a regular newsletter that I really enjoy. It has lots of tips in it and some very good in-depth information that helps me make better decisions---or at least ask better questions!

Moving to Langford Financial was a great decision for me. It has lead to better financial planning and decision-making and much greater peace of mind for me at this time of life.
